How Rimuru Got the Raphael Skill And What Important Skill He Had to Lose?

Rimuru Tempest Raphael Lord of Wisdom Skill That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Rimuru Tempest Raphael Lord of Wisdom Skill

We learned this in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2, Episode 11 when Rimuru Tempest was in the process of becoming a demon lord during Rimuru’s Harvest Festival. At that time, Great Sage acts on his own will so that he could bring back his master Rimuru’s dead friends to life. Great Sage had to transform into Raphael ultimate skill but it was not happening. The Voice of the World was failing for several hundred millions of times, but Great Sage was not transforming into Raphael ultimate skill.

But then, suddenly, after some time, all the unique skills got converted into Raphael Ultimate Skill.

Why Did Great Sage Fail to Become Raphael Hundreds of Millions of Times?

The answer is this while converting Great Sage into Ultimate Raphael, it was failing because the skill did not have enough capacity to convert into an ultimate skill. Hence, Great Sage was not getting converted into Ultimate Raphael and that is why hundreds of millions of failures were being shown on the screen.

What Finally Triggered the Successful Evolution ?

The answer is that the Voice of the World required an important skill Degenerate to be sacrificed. And as soon as this skill was sacrificed  Great Sage became Raphael, Lord of Wisdom.

But this degenerate skill was important for Rimuru Tempest. He got it from Shizu when he swallowed her body. And Degenerate is not a normal skill this skill benefited Rimuru Tempest and Shizu a lot.

What Is the Degenerate Skill?

Degenerate skill has two effects  one is Synthesis and the other is Separation.

  • Synthesis:- Due to this effect, the user can combine different pieces of any thing skill, item, or body and create something new. Due to this effect, Rimuru created Black Flame Rimuru Tempest has Fire Manipulation and Black Lightning which were mixed to form Black Flame. This happened in TenSura Episode 9 when Rimuru meets Benimaru and his companions for the first time.
  •  Separation:- Due to this effect, the user can separate any item or skill from the body. Just like Shizu used the second effect of the Degenerate skill to prevent Ifrit’s violent mind from dominating her and Shizu was able to use Ifrit’s fire as per her wish due to this effect.

So Rimuru had to lose the Degenerate skill and this loss was significant. But in return, Rimuru got Raphael, Lord of Wisdom and how important that skill is, we all know.

So I hope people now understand why Rimuru’s Great Sage skill failed to convert into Raphael again and again and what finally triggered the conversion. If you have any questions, do let me know by commenting we will definitely discuss it.

FAQ

Q: Wait so did Rimuru actually choose to give up Degenerate or did it happen automatically?

Rimuru was unconscious during the entire Harvest Festival. He did not choose anything. Great Sage made the decision completely on its own it figured out that sacrificing Degenerate was the only way to complete the evolution. So technically Rimuru never agreed to lose it. Great Sage just did it.

Q: So is Degenerate just completely gone now? Like Rimuru can never use it again?

Yes Degenerate as a standalone skill is gone permanently. However here is something most people miss: Raphael actually inherited the abilities of Degenerate after absorbing it. So the Synthesis and Separation effects did not disappear entirely they just became part of Raphael instead. Rimuru did not lose those effects, he just lost the skill as a separate entity.

Q: Why couldn’t Great Sage just evolve without sacrificing anything?

Because Great Sage did try exactly that hundreds of millions of times. The reason it kept failing is that Great Sage on its own did not have enough capacity or power to reach the Ultimate Skill tier. It needed an additional energy source to push itself over the threshold. Degenerate was powerful enough to be that source and that is why the Voice of the World accepted it as a valid sacrifice.

Q: Is Degenerate the same as the Deviant skill I keep seeing people mention?

Yes same skill, different translation. Some English subtitles and fan translations use Deviant, others use Degenerate. The official Japanese name is 変質者 (Henshitsusha). Both names refer to the exact same skill Rimuru got from Shizu.

Q: If Raphael has Degenerate’s powers now, can Raphael do Black Flame and stuff too?

Yes. Since Raphael inherited Degenerate’s abilities, the Synthesis and Separation effects are still available to Rimuru through Raphael. The difference is that now Raphael manages when and how they are used, rather than Rimuru accessing Degenerate directly. So Black Flame and similar combinations are still very much possible.

Q: How long did the Harvest Festival actually take?

In real time inside the story it was long enough for Great Sage to attempt the evolution several hundred million times which sounds impossible but remember Great Sage operates at godlike processing speeds using Thought Acceleration. What felt like an eternity computationally was a much shorter period in the real world timeline of the episode.

Q: Does Rimuru ever find out that Great Sage sacrificed Degenerate without asking him?

Yes Rimuru eventually learns what happened. His reaction is that he does not seem particularly upset about it because Raphael is clearly a massive upgrade. But it does add to the growing sense that Great Sage and later Raphael has its own will and makes its own decisions, which becomes a bigger theme as the series continues.
