What is Galaxy Express 999?
Created by legendary manga artist Leiji Matsumoto, it is a masterpiece of space opera sci-fi. The story takes place in a distant future where space travel is common. Humanity is divided into two distinct classes. They have transferred their minds into expensive mechanical bodies, allowing them to live forever. However, they have lost their empathy and treat regular humans like sport. They cannot afford cybernetic bodies and live in absolute poverty on harsh, freezing planets.
The story follows Tetsuro Hoshino, a poor human orphan boy. His mother is brutally hunted and killed for sport by a wealthy cyborg named Count Mecha. Before dying, her final wish is for Tetsuro to get a mechanical body so he can survive. Tetsuro learns that the Galaxy Express 999 a magical, spacefaring steam train takes passengers to the Andromeda Galaxy, where mechanical bodies are given away for free. Tickets are incredibly expensive. Just as he despairs, he meets Maetel, a beautiful, mysterious woman dressed in a black fur coat.

She looks exactly like his late mother. Maetel offers Tetsuro a free pass on the train under one condition he must accompany her as her traveling companion. As the train stops at various planets across the universe, Tetsuro witnesses the dark reality of immortality. He meets cyborgs who are deeply depressed, bored, and regret losing their flesh-and-blood humanity. He sees that machine people have lost their souls, emotions, and the ability to appreciate life. He slowly begins to question his own goal of becoming a machine.
When they finally reach the mechanized home planet, Tetsuro discovers a horrifying truth the free mechanical bodies are a trap. The planet’s ruler Maetel’s mother, Queen Promethium uses the bodies of enthusiastic human travelers to physically build the infrastructure of her expanding machine empire. With Maetel’s help, Tetsuro rebels He rejects the mechanical body, choosing to remain human. They destroy the mechanized planet and defeat the Queen. Tetsuro realizes that human life is beautiful precisely because it is limited and temporary.
At the very end, Maetel leaves Tetsuro on Earth. She boards the Galaxy Express 999 alone, destined to guide the next youth of the universe, leaving Tetsuro behind to build a new future for humanity.
