After watching the first two episodes of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3, the question must have crossed your mind: why did Eris Boreas Greyrat leave Rudeus Greyrat? It happened due to a massive communication failure. In Episode 23 of Season 1, we saw Rudeus and Eris sleep together; at that time, Rudeus was 13 years old and Eris was 15 (nearing her 16th birthday). This was, in a way, a gift from Eris to Rudeus for his 15th birthday, as he had always desired to be intimate with her.
After spending the night with him, Eris left a note while he was asleep stating that she was not a good match for him and was setting out on a journey. She then departed with Ghislaine to embark on a quest to become stronger. When Rudeus woke up and couldn’t find her, he searched everywhere upon reading the note she left, he mistakenly believed she had abandoned him because she didn’t want to be with him.
It was in the wake of this event that Rudeus developed erectile dysfunction (ED). In reality, he had misunderstood her reasons Eris left because she wanted to become powerful enough to protect him. She felt this way because, in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Season 1, Episode 21), she had witnessed Rudeus being killed by the Dragon God Orsted. Watching her beloved die right before her eyes while feeling utterly helpless and unable to save him devastated her. Although Rudeus was eventually revived, the fact that he had died even briefly and that she had been powerless to prevent it shattered her.
She felt that her own weakness was the cause of his death that time, and from that moment on, she resolved to become so powerful that no one not even a Dragon God could ever kill Rudeus again. If any threat even a Dragon God were to come for Rudeus in the future, it would have to go through Eris first. She resolved that she would not let the Dragon God live she would kill it.
Consequently, Eris set out on a journey with Ghislaine to the Holy Land of Swords to grow stronger and become worthy of Rudeus. She felt she wasn’t yet capable of standing by his side a sentiment she had expressed in her letter. When she wrote, “We are not well matched,” she meant, “I am not strong enough for you yet; I am too weak right now. I am going to train so I can be a worthy partner for you.” However, Rudeus completely misunderstood her words he thought she was saying, “You aren’t good enough for me in bed” or “You aren’t good enough as a partner.” Eris dumps him and leaves. She even cuts her hair before departing a gesture that symbolizes the end of their relationship, though it was also meant as a token of her love.
Why does Rudeus have Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?
Immediately after she leaves, Rudeus develops Erectile Dysfunction (ED). He suffers from this condition for nearly three years, though the root cause is psychological rather than physical. He had spent those years escorting Eris through the Demon Continent, loving her deeply; the day they finally consummated their relationship was the best of his life, as it was something he had long desired.
However, waking up to find Eris gone left him feeling utterly rejected. This experience shattered his ego and sense of self-worth. His subconscious mind linked intimacy with intense emotional pain, rejection, and abandonment. To protect him from getting hurt again, his brain shut down his physiological response to arousal, resulting in his ED. He tries various medications to cure the condition, but nothing works. He only recovers after meeting Sylphiette at Ranoa University; she offers him kindness, patience, and emotional and mental support. Gradually, his self-confidence returns.
Although he initially fails when they attempt to be intimate, Sylphiette gives him a special magical aphrodisiac potion. While the potion helps alleviate his physical anxiety, it is Sylphiette’s comforting words assuring him that she will never abandon him and that he is not a loser that truly help, and they eventually consummate their relationship and Rudeus’s condition is cured.
When does Eris return in the anime?
Now, another important question coming up is when does Eris return in the anime? When will the reunion of Rudeus and Eris happen? Eris largely disappears during the University Arc (Season 2). However, with the release of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 3, we have already seen Eris in the first and second episodes; she is currently learning swordsmanship in the Holy Sword Land. As for the reunion between Rudeus and Eris, that will happen much later they do not actually come face-to-face until the climax of the Dragon God Arc, which is set to take place towards the end of Season 3.
